Three years ago, I wrote a little piece called Theory, Practice and Fantasy of the Second Amendment “right of rebellion, in which I noted that the supposedly respectable conservative website for National Review was featuring writers such as Kevin D. Williamson and, as it turned out later Charles C.W. Cooke (here) both advocating for the private possession of machine guns, and, in Cooke’s case, rocket launchers, to better make war upon a supposedly tyrannical government.
Now, none of this fools me. These are highly educated people (Cooke went to Oxford or something like that). Now, I know how boring such a life can be. Dare I eat a peach? My own life is dull, ordinary, and laden with responsibility, like that of many people. But there’s word for that: civilization. Mental escape from this is occasionally necessary; that’s why we have movies like The Poseidon Adventure (the real deal from 1972).
But isn’t there an especial attraction of firearms — the ultimate arbitrator — to people to live such boring lives? You can live out your own fantasy movie every day. Instead of a dork, you’re the Defender of the Constitution.
We have presently a group of fools, none of whom is likely to have gone to Oxford, who go around the country trying to foment some sort of armed confrontation with the federal government.
Presently these idiots are now out in Harney County, in my state, where they have taken over the ranger station for the Malheur County Wildlife Refuge. Apparently that’s where the tyranny’s all coming from.
So, now is the chance for all the Second Amendment talk the talkers to walk the walk. A nice little rebellion is brewing in Harney County, Oregon (current temperature: 19 degrees). Time to join up! You’d better squeeze all the Charmin you can, when Mr. Whipple’s not around.
